Angry French vintners smash wine bottles in protest against too-low prices

A group of angry French wine farmers in the Rhône region recently protested in front of supermarket Lidl against the sale of Côtes du Rhône for as little as €1.69 a bottle. They are angry because, according to them, the wines are being sold at a loss.

Angry winemakers gathered in front of Lidl supermarkets in Orange and Bagnols-sur-Cèze and smashed several bottles of Côtes-du-Rhône wine. In doing so, they protested against the sale of Rhône wines at dumping prices. A selling price of just €1.69 per bottle would not do Côtes du Rhône's image any good either. The winegrowers argue that producing such a wine costs them a minimum of €1.40 per litre, but supermarkets only give them €0.80 per litre and they then sell the wines at too low prices. The winemakers demand that they get the price the wine is worth so that they can make a living from it.
