Pink is in fashion. Especially when it comes to drinks. The same goes for sparkling rosé. Whether with champagne, cava, sekt or crémant: sparkling rosé is 'IT' at the moment. Reason enough to put it on the WineLife tasting table. Together with importer Paul Frankhuizen, Rijst selected the 27 finest from the 61 entries. Text Magda van der Rijst
Fashion or not, we always loved pink bubbles. The really nice ones then, of course. Of course, the difference with a sparkling white wine is not only in the colour. A serious sparkling rosé, made according to the méthode traditionnelle, has more aromas of red fruit and a slightly firmer bite compared to its white counterpart. This is due to the added red wine or because the wine has been made with a saignée rosé.
Approach & Criteria
Of course, there are endless differences between pink bubbles. Their colour, aroma, taste and style depend on the origin, the grape varieties used, the winemaker and the quality. We noticed this during the tasting. Wines from all over the world were flown in, but the majority came from Europe. Champagne was the most widely represented. We also tasted a large number of crémants and cavas, some Italians and also some wines from Germany, Austria, Australia and South Africa.
