According to some storytellers, wine also featured in the folk tale of Little Red Riding Hood as part of the nourishing provisions that the girl carried in a basket to her grandmother’s house. The German brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm wrote in 1812: ‘Come on, Little Red Riding Hood, here’s a slice of cake and a bottle of wine; take them out to your grandmother; she’s ill and weak and will be delighted with them.’
Modern scientific research may well contradict the idea of wine as ‘Grandma’s medicine’, but it remains a lovely image.
