In ancient times, the Roman god Bacchus (known to the Greeks as Dionysus) was the god of wine, fertility and ecstasy. Bacchus is often depicted wearing a leopard skin, which symbolises his wild nature.
But here we see Bacchus as a naked child, a reference to carefree innocence. His cult centred on festivals and rituals in which people temporarily set aside everyday conventions.
In Germany, there is a grape variety named after Bacchus, and the pedigree of that Bacchus is just as complicated as that of the god who was born twice. This cross between Muller-Thurgau blended with Silvaner and Riesling is particularly popular in England.
