Château Purcari, the Freedom Blend from Moldova 2020
A wine made as a statement against the war in Ukraine, and intended as a boost for everyone involved. Château Purcari made a manifesto for freedom with the Freedom Blend. Because the war is so close here that the Château could not keep its distance. Indeed, it is located 800 metres from the Ukrainian border, The assemblage was made earlier in 2014 when the Russians annexed Crimea. It is a blend of indigenous grapes from Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. They represent the heart of Georgia, the terroir of Moldova and the free spirit of Ukraine through the use of bastardo (Ukraine), raraˇ neagraˇ (Moldova) and saperavi (Georgia). This wine is not only a tribute to the courage and solidarity of these countries, but also an act of gratitude and support for the heroic fight and resistance of the Ukrainian people.
How does a rebel wine taste born of this thought? Spicy and herbal, full of fresh red fruits like ripe cherry, cranberry and ripe currant. But you also taste the influence of the nine-month ageing in wooden barrels in the dried plum, clove and dark chocolate with a drizzle of espresso. It is highly recommended with such a steaming plate of kale, but also very tasty with red meat from the grill.
