Deluge in Pinot paradise... help the Ahr!

Pinot Blanc graces the cover of the new WINELIFE. But did you know that the nature-stricken German wine region of the Ahr is known as the 'Pinot paradise'? Spätburgunder (pinot noir) and Frühburgunder (pinot madeleine) are the specialities of the stunning Ahr valley, which is just a three-hour drive from the Netherlands.

Floods

When extreme rainfall and flooding hit southern Limburg and Belgium hard in mid-July, the Ahr valley was hit many times harder. The river Ahr of the same name overflowed its banks and in an apocalyptic deluge nearly 150 Germans lost their lives.

Unprecedented disaster

Countless cellars of wineries - generally located along the river - flooded. You probably know the images of distraught people who lost everything at once and of wine barrels that ended up miles away, carried away by the mudslides. A disaster of unprecedented proportions.

Benefit tasting

To provide emergency aid to the Ahr and its affected producers, several actions have been launched. One of these is a benefit tasting of many wonderful Ahr wines taking place in Amsterdam-Noord next Monday, 23 August. For this, the German Wine Institute and Perswijn magazine joined forces with many importers.

A wine auction will also take place between 23 August and 6 September by Perswijn in collaboration with Winefield's Auctioneers, who also facilitate everything for free.
