WINELIFE went to the Mediterranean country and travelled from the Istrian coast to capital Zagreb to find out, while sipping wine, how hard they are working on a renewed and better gastronomy. Croatia has a centuries-old wine tradition and yet today winemakers are struggling to revive the craft. Wars and communism made endemic grape varieties disappear, vineyards were destroyed and winemakers sought refuge elsewhere. Cuisine became more austere and the wine industry was brought to its knees.
