Ventisquero Grey Glacier, Single Block Merlot (2019)

This edition of WINELIFE's Buying Guide focuses on merlot. No wonder, it is one of the most famous and popular grapes on the planet. It is usually bottled together with cabernet sauvignon, but it also stands its ground on its own. Just taste this Ventisquero Grey Glacier, Single Block Merlot, and check if you agree with Evelijn van Heuven. She describes it as velvety and concentrated, with aromas of plums and figs.

The wines in the Grey series, named after one of Chile´s famous glaciers, are each from one specific plot in a vineyard. They are wines with a very specific terroir expression. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected under the personal supervision of chief winemaker Felipe Tosso. This Merlot comes from the La Roblería vineyard in Apalta, Colchagua. The grapes were on a plot with a soil with half a metre of sand on a subsoil of granite. The slope here is steep: as much as 30 per cent. Such growing conditions result in a powerful wine with lots of structure and a great long finish. Your dinner can't go wrong when you pair it with a game stew with mushrooms.
