Sun, sea and… Sicily. Those three go hand in hand. Just like Italian wine and Nero d’Avola, the best-known indigenous blue grape variety from this Italian island in the Mediterranean. ‘Nero’ means black, and Avola, the town in south-eastern Sicily, is its birthplace. This grape variety often produces heavy and intense wines, but this wine is fresh and fruity. That is because this is a wine made from Tenuta Regaleali. The estate is situated in the centre of the island, far from the hot coastal plains. On hills with limestone and clay soils, the grapes benefit from significant temperature differences between day and night. The result is a rare combination of ripeness and freshness. The wine is concentrated, with soft tannins and fresh acidity, so it’s also lovely served slightly chilled on its own. Juicy and spicy with a hint of pepper and red fruit. We opened a bottle to accompany a mushroom risotto, but be sure to try it with a grilled lamb chop too.
