Jean-Luc Colombo 'Les Abeilles' Blanc, Côtes du Rhône 2020

Jean-Luc Colombo is one of the 'great' and most successful winemakers in the Rhône. This is because he has the vision that wine is made in the vineyard, and not in the cellar. That's a lot of work, especially if you go for organic viticulture. Especially if you want to keep yields limited for higher concentration in the grape. The yields per vine therefore stay at 2 kilos or less. Harvesting takes place when the clairette and roussanne grapes are really ripe. Then the clairette ferments on tank and the roussanne rests for 6 months on the lie in oak barrels aged 2 to 5 years. The blend of these gives a spicy, crisp and powerful wine, with citrus, granny smith, gooseberry and a piece of pear tart as signature flavours. It is a fine fine fine wine to enjoy on its own or drink it with grilled fish, sushi or a light salad.

The wine is called Les Abeilles (the bees) because these indispensable insects also live in the vineyards of the southern Rhône Valley, which is the origin of this wine. This is done without pesticides so these honeybees do survive here. For the Colombo family, this is of great importance as they are active beekeepers in addition to grape growers. For every bottle sold, a contribution is made to the British Beekeepers' Association.
