Doruk Merlot 2020

Who occasionally drinks Turkish wine? No. Too bad, but not entirely incomprehensible. Indeed, Turkey is not one of the most famous wine countries. It does grow a lot of grapes, though. In fact: it is the largest grape producer in the world. But of as many as 750 different varieties, only 5 percent are used for wine. Unfortunately for us, it is mainly drunk by its more European-oriented inhabitants. Most of its grape varieties are indigenous and have difficult to pronounce names such as papazkarası, kabarcık, dökülgen, hasandede, öküzgözü and boğazkere. Wine is also made from a number of European grape varieties. One of these is merlot. This Bordeaux classic does great in the hot Turkish climate, especially if it comes from Vinkara vineyards. That's a big whole player in Ankara, they make a huge puddle of wine of up to 1,040,000 litres every year in an extremely convenient location. Namely, the vineyards are located on high plateaus in the mountains, 650 metres above sea level. So it is cool at night and warm during the day, the prerequisite for wine in balance. Vinkara's big goal is to introduce quality Turkish wines to the world.

They do so, for example, with this Merlot. We have enough European merlot comparison material to taste that this is a successful version. It is not a complicated wine, but one that will make you happy. It is soft and supple, and packed with ripe fruit like raspberry and blackcurrant and cherry. It is not a sourpuss at all and there are no distracting tannins to detect either. Recommended: pour the wine in a decanter beforehand and you will be rewarded with the aromas of vanilla, chocolate and mocha. Try this wine with pulled pork or a beef stew. The perfect match!
