2020 E.&J. Gallo 'Dark Horse' Chardonnay, California
Dark Horse is one of the wines from E. & J. Gallo. Gallo is a family-owned company that has long been a leader in the wine industry. Its various vineyards are all located in California and Washington.
Dark horse is a beautiful winery based in the state of California. Beth Liston (owner and founder) regularly rides her black horse through the vineyards to keep a close eye on the ripening process of the grapes, hence the winery's name. The winery's vision is to produce elegant but powerful wines, using only the very best grapes to do so.
The grapes for the Dark Horse Chardonnay were harvested at optimum ripeness and carefully selected by winemaker Beth Liston.
Flavour description
A scent of ripe apples and pear fruit, somewhat pleasantly subdued on the nose with a toasty edge. Where quickly a Californian Chardonnay is seen as a thick fat wine. This is a surprisingly elegant wine. It is certainly edgey and filmy on the palate, but is lively enough to remain digestible with it. It's the bitters of toasted hazelnuts that dissolve the greasiness and give space for the fruit to return in the finish.
Application
Essential with this wine is not to serve it too hot. Pour it at refrigerator temperature. This ensures that the richness of the wine, does not take over. Of course, do use a nice big Burgundy glass. It's not a wine to lay down, it's enjoy now!!!
Wine and food
It really is an all-rounder, whether it is delicious with drinks or a 'late night' drink. It goes great with North Sea fish or veal. And whether you like Dutch pot or Asian cuisine, this wine goes with all winds. A wine that can do almost anything!
